2011 Communicating Ocean Science Workshop and SEANET Meeting - 12.07.2010

Communicating Ocean Science Workshop
Agenda.

This half-day workshop kicked off the Alaska Marine Science
Symposium in Anchorage and featured "how to" session for
scientists to do more effective outreach and education through
the media and in Alaskan coastal communities and rural schools.
Nancy Baron of the Communication Partnership for Science and
the Sea (COMPASS) was the featured speaker on the risks and
rewards of science communication. The SEANET Luncheon
meeting involved planning for the 2012 National Marine
Educators Association conference to be held in Anchorage.

More than 1100 people registered for the Alaska Marine
Science Symposium, a record number. COSEE Alaska had
a display at the poster sessions and co-authored
an oral presentation on the Bering Sea Ecosystem scientist-
teacher professional development workshop and its
collaborative product,the Bering Sea Collection,
and a poster presentation on its recruitment of scientists to
become involved in a long-running rural education program
centered around salmon classroom incubation projects.
