How Students Can Participate in Ocean Science Fairs

Teachers and school administrators can organize a fair at their school or district using the COSEE Manual for Science Camps, Fairs and Projects, which provides “how to” information and hundreds of science fair project ideas focused on the challenge of dealing with accelerating change as the effects of a warming climate ripple through Alaska’s ocean ecosystems, watersheds, and communities. Contact COSEE Alaska for more information and help with finding scientist mentors and judges. Some funding is available to pay travel costs for an award winner at a local or regional fair to participate in the statewide fair and an accompanying teacher.

Students can enter a project in the statewide fair even if they have not competed in a local or regional fair. To be considered for judging and awards from COSEE Alaska, there is a special box to check off on the entry form that indicates the project is related to the ocean, river, or watershed and has cultural or community relevance. If students cannot travel to the state fair, they can participate in a "cyberfair" by arranging to present their project and be interviewed by judges using SKYPE.
